      Reaching for Dreams

We have been learning  to compose free verse using The Olympics as a theme.
We began by brainstorming our ideas about the Olympics. We made a second brainstorm focusing on one emotion connected with being an Olympian.

We know that poetry gets to the essence of life and our experiences by choosing precise words that have emotional impact. We know that every word in a poem has to count. We know that poets use word order, punctuation and layout to get their message across.
First  we  worked as a whole class on Freddy's poem to help him edit it.
Mrs Brett photocopied our drafts and we worked in small groups to help each other edit, using the features of poetry we had learnt about. It took time; several sessions, before we got our poems to a point we were happy with.
You can see some steps in our crafting and some of our finished poems. We would welcome your feedback.

Olympic Poem                              Determination
Flames burn inside my heart,                                  Blood, sweat and tears,
every nerve on fire.                                                  Hopes are up and so are cheers, those cheers!

Wind whistling past me;                                    Pushing, pushing for everything you've got.
it's crispness cooling me on the outside,                  No giving up now...
inside I'm on fire!                                                     Determination.
Sweat clutches my scalp                                            Lol Freddy!
and very slowly...
let's go.

GOLD                                                Disappointment

A face of joy                                                                    The shimmering white horse
A weight of gold                                                                   canters to the jump
"Yay"                                                                               Coming first place so far
A deep voice says,                                                       You lose grip at the last moment
Through a microphone that sounds,                                         You fall,
Sounds all around the world                                            You fall with a thud
Nearly drowned out                                                             Disappointment
by a magnificent choir of cheers;                                     Explodes inside you
